strives to continually deepen and broaden our impact. Job Summary
The Associate Camp Director is responsible for the development,
management, and evaluation of BCNY Harriman Base Camp Summer
programs. They will work in partnership with the Camp Director in
managing the overall operation of the camp including
outreach/intake, curriculum, programming, scheduling, training,
staff and camper supervision. The Associate Camp Director models
the camp culture that is based on mutually respectful relationships
with campers, parents, summer staff, and colleagues that, together,
enable excellence. The Associate Camp Director prioritizes the
mental and physical wellbeing of campers and staff in all aspects
of their practice. They will live on-site for the entire summer
camp season and serve as a role model to campers and staff by their
actions, appearance, manners, language, and general conduct. Serve
as Camp Director when the Camp Director is unavailable or unable to
perform job duties. Throughout the year, in addition to planning
and reporting about summer camp, they will work in collaboration
with the Camp Director to implement the McKenna Expeditionary Team
which foster a sense of adventure and a pathway to leadership to
BCNY members across all Clubhouses and units. They will also spend
time in the clubhouses with members to connect and encourage
interest in attending camp. Responsibilities
- Safety:
- Implement and maintain safety guidelines to align with New York
State and local health and safety codes.
- Mitigate risk wherever possible, ensure that proper safety
precautions are being followed, and make safety recommendations to
the Camp Director, while encouraging creativity and meeting
members' needs.
- Implement restorative justice practices to address and resolve
conflicts in a positive and constructive manner.
- Participate as a member of the crisis team.
- Operations:
- Work closely with camp leadership to ensure BCNY's mission is
consistently integrated across all areas of camp operations.
- Supervise the staff culture including orientation, training,
evaluation, staff meetings, and housing.
- Oversee the daily operations of camp sessions, including
transportation of campers and program schedule.
- Provide superior customer service experience to campers,
families, and volunteers
- Submit all paperwork, health records, incident reports, payroll
documents, and invoices to the Camp Director in a timely
manner.
- Work with Camp Leadership team to establish and enforce
behavioral expectations and procedures for campers.
- Programming:
- Collaborate with the Camp Director to develop and promote
community-building efforts, program outreach, and retention
initiatives with members and families throughout the year.
- Oversee summer staff schedules, ensuring adequate coverage and
providing coverage as needed
- Mentor staff in their career development, providing resources
and advice for professional growth.
- Assess program evaluations utilizing pre and/or post surveys to
ensure program effectiveness.
- Participate as a member of the camp staff to support programs,
special events, off-site trips, overnights, and other all-camp
activities. Competencies and areas of expertise may include:
- Ability to project a high level of professionalism while
networking in the public arena and interacting with parents, adult
volunteers, and other stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new
software as required.
- Ability to stay calm and apply sound judgment during
emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of campers and
staff.
- Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information and
maintain confidentiality.
- Strategic thinker with demonstrated experience in managing
multiple projects simultaneously with changing priorities and tight
deadlines.
- Support BCNY's core values and principles.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations
requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency
(fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and
endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
Qualifications
- Wilderness First-Aid and CPR/AED and Food Handling or Safe
Serve certifications;
- Excellent working skills including communication,
organizational and attention to details.
- Experience working with youth programs preferably in a
non-profit or membership-based agency; or equivalent combinations
of education and experience.
- Demonstrated positive track record in community building and
youth engagement.
- Senior management experience including strong leadership skills
to motivate and retain high-performing staff.
- Skilled facilitator in de-escalation, conflict resolution, and
restorative justice practice
- Ability to drive, possession of a valid driver's license, and
clean DMV record.
- Experience working in a residential summer camp setting is a
plus.
- . Education or Experience
- Bachelor's Degree with three years' experience in supervision
of youth summer camp / recreational activities or relevant
managerial experience. Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work in an outside environment, where you have
the ability to walk/hike daily, at various grades, elevations, and
on uneven terrain.
- Must be able to lift 40-50 pounds, and carry and load luggage,
tables, chairs, and other program equipment. The Boys' Club of New
